Dear Members,
We are writing to provide an update regarding the binding interest arbitration process with Metro Vancouver.
As reported at our October Regular Membership meeting, the parties were scheduled to begin the hearing before the appointed Arbitrator on October 8, 9, and 12. Unfortunately, due to illness, the Union requested that the October 8 and 9 hearing dates be postponed and that new dates be made available for the parties to continue the hearing.
Following a case management call with the Arbitrator, the parties agreed to set aside October 23, 28, and 29, as well as November 9 and 10 (tentatively), to continue the hearing. Fortunately, the parties were able to use yesterday’s previously scheduled arbitration date to present their opening statements to the Arbitrator in person.
To move the process forward as efficiently as possible, the parties also agreed to rely on “will says” (written testimony provided in advance) rather than presenting evidence orally, which will reduce the amount of hearing time required. It is expected the parties’ witnesses will then be cross-examined on the rescheduled hearing dates.
We recognize that renewing the Collective Agreement with the Employer has been a lengthy and, at times, frustrating process. We thank the membership for its continued patience and support.
We will keep you informed as soon as further information becomes available.
In solidarity,
GVRDEU Bargaining Committee
