GVRDEU Bargaining Member Update #1

Dear GVRDEU Brothers and Sisters,

We’ve compiled a list of common questions from members regarding the upcoming collective bargaining process. The following Q&A is intended to provide clear answers and help keep everyone informed as we move forward.

Q1: What was the purpose of the survey sent to all the members?

A1: The survey was an opportunity for every member to have their voice heard and to share what they wanted included in the upcoming bargaining proposal. Your input has been essential in shaping that proposal. Each survey response was carefully reviewed by the Bargaining Committee, and we deeply appreciate the members who also reached out directly to their Bargaining Representatives to express what matters most to them at the table.

The Bargaining Committee met several times to consider all this feedback and craft a proposal that reflects the overall tone, priorities, and concerns of the membership. While not every individual request can be included, the final proposal was designed to serve the collective needs and best interests of all members.

Q2: Why haven’t we started bargaining for a new contract since it expired in December 2024?

A2: Both the employer and the union had agreed to postpone bargaining until the conclusion of the vacation carry-over arbitration hearing. However, due to ongoing and unexpected delays in the arbitration process, which have significantly prolonged the timeline, we have formally notified the employer of our intention to begin contract negotiations. A meeting with the employer will be scheduled within the next 10 days to officially start the bargaining process.

Q3: Who is on the Bargaining Committee?

A3: The Union’s Executive Board and the following GVRDEU members elected from the floor to serve on your Bargaining Committee are:

  • Shant Bedrossian
  • Daryl Dias
  • Chad Esplen
  • Shanda Morrison

Q4: Will members receive updates on the bargaining process?

A4: Members have elected the GVRDEU Bargaining Committee to represent their best interests at the table. While we understand the importance of staying informed, we will not be providing updates at every step of the process.

Bargaining is a strategic and often a sensitive process, thus the discussions are kept at the bargaining table.  Sharing too much detail along the way could compromise our position and goes against the commitment agreed upon by both parties not to disclose the talks in public. Rest assured, our Committee is committed to achieving meaningful gains and advancing the priorities of the membership. We will provide updates when there are significant developments to share.

Q5: What if we can’t reach an agreement with the employer?

A5: If an agreement cannot be reached through negotiations, the union will explore all other options available, such as mediation or job action, depending on the circumstances. The union will take the necessary steps to protect and advance members’ interests.

Your Support Matters

The success of our collective bargaining depends on the strength and unity of all our members. Your support is essential in many ways, whether it is by sharing your feedback, staying informed, working within your job descriptions, or simply standing together during negotiations. While the Bargaining Committee works hard to represent your interests, it is our collective strength that truly makes a difference.

Thank you for standing in solidarity with us throughout this important process.

In Solidarity,

GVRDEU Bargaining Committee
