Mileage for Taking a Laptop Home Arbitration

n

This grievance began when a Member requested mileage payments for taking a laptop computer home and bringing it back to work again when he was on standby. He did this under the Union’s contention that it was a ‘tool’ and therefore, under the language in the contract, should draw mileage payments. It should be noted that this was not an ordinary laptop computer, its value goes beyond the cost of replacing the hardware and software, as it contains the operating software for the Water and Sewer Board’s computerized control system for things like water system valves and pumps and pumping stations in the sewer system.

It all went before Arbitrator Rod Germaine on May 5, 2004, and he issued this Award on August 25, 2004.
